Penny came into my life during my first year out of college, when I was a teacher in rural Mississippi. There aren’t many details from her first two years of life. But we know that Penny was found scared and with a litter of fresh puppies abandoned by a dumpster. Her puppies were quickly adopted but Penny was shy and fearful and stayed in the shelter for over a year without adoption interest. When I walked into the shelter and first saw her, I knew she was my soul dog.
Penny spent almost every day of my first 10 ten years of adulthood by my side. We traveled all over the US, moved from house to house and state to state, from Mississippi to Kentucky to Tennessee and finally to California. Every friend of mine was also a friend of Penny’s. We named our parties after her, we’ve hosted a decade of “Penny’s Friendsgivings”, and she was truly an icon with a sprawling fanbase of humans and other dogs alike.
Penny was my constant companion and was there for me in lowest moments and best moments. As Penny aged, I realized I had never been an adult without her. She was always there, my best friend, my companion. Losing her has been one of the roughest losses of my life but I am so grateful for every moment we had together and will cherish our memories forever. Love you forever, Pen Pen
